It’s been pretty rough for Ford lately.

Ford recalls nearly 1.4 million F-150 pickup trucks in the U.S. after federal regulators said a transmission-related problem can cause certain trucks to suddenly downshift into second gear while driving.

The recall covers 2015-2017 F-150 models equipped with the 6-speed 6R80 transmission. According to Ford, the issue involves the transmission range sensor sending an incorrect signal to the powertrain control module. In some cases, that can trigger an unexpected downshift into second gear at speed.

Ford says the issue is linked to heat, vibration, and thermal cycling over time, which can degrade electrical connections in the transmission lead frame. Regulators have linked the problem to at least one crash and two possible injuries.

Why the Fix May Raise Questions

Ford’s remedy is a software update to the truck’s powertrain control module. The automaker says the new calibration is designed to better detect a failing transmission range sensor before the condition can trigger the downshift.

That may still leave some owners with questions. If the root problem is physical wear in an electrical connection, it is fair to ask how much a software update solves on its own. Ford also says that if certain trouble codes are already present before the update is installed, dealers will replace the lead frame under an extended warranty program at no charge.

What Owners Should Do

Ford’s recall number is 26S28, and the NHTSA campaign number is 26V237. Owners can check their VIN through Ford or NHTSA to see if their truck is included.
