Washington campground closures are expanding as state officials confirm multiple full shutdowns and reduced access across Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recreation sites.
The changes follow our previously reported concerns about potential closures earlier this year, which we covered here and on the RV and Camping News Video.
Closures and Reduced Access Across the State
The DNR says four campgrounds will fully close for the 2026 season:
- Anderson Lake Campground (Elbe)
- Rock Lakes Campground (Conconully)
- Upper Clearwater Campground (Forks)
- Island Camp (Glenwood) โ closed to overnight camping
Several other campgrounds and recreation areas will see shortened seasons or reduced services.
These changes come after $580,000 was cut from the agencyโs maintenance fund during the 2026 legislative session, adding to what officials describe as long-standing staffing and funding shortages.

Maintenance Impacts Expected
DNR officials say not every recreation site will close, but visitors should expect noticeable changes across the system.
Storm recovery may take longer, trailhead bathrooms may not be stocked, and overall site maintenance will be reduced. Trash collection and staffing levels will also be impacted.
The agency currently operates with about 60 field staff statewideโroughly one employee for every 50,000 acres and 333,000 visitors.
Some seasonal closures, including those affecting trails in the Harry Osborne State Forest, will limit access during winter months through early 2027.
State officials say earlier proposals could have led to even deeper cuts, and they plan to work with lawmakers ahead of the 2027 legislative session to find longer-term solutions.
