General Motors is ending production of its Silverado medium-duty trucks, closing the chapter on the 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD models that returned Chevrolet to the larger commercial truck market less than a decade ago.
The trucks are not the same as the consumer-focused Silverado 1500, 2500HD, or 3500HD pickups. These are larger chassis-cab commercial trucks typically used for utility bodies, equipment hauling, and other work-truck applications. In the RV world, the Silverado medium-duty has been used for some Super C motorhomes.
According to GM Authority, production of the Silverado medium-duty lineup will end after GMโs manufacturing agreement with International Motors concludes on September 30, 2026. The partnership traces back to a 2015 agreement between General Motors and Navistar to develop and assemble medium-duty conventional cab trucks, with production planned at Navistarโs Springfield, Ohio facility.

Silverado Medium-Duty Sales Have Slowed
The decision comes after weak sales in the segment. Chevrolet reportedly sold 1,273 Silverado medium-duty trucks in the first quarter of 2026, down more than 37% from the same period last year.
For comparison, Ford sold more than 2,300 F-650 and F-750 trucks during that same quarter, nearly double Chevroletโs total. Ford and Ram also remain major players in the larger truck and chassis market used by many Super C RV manufacturers.
Consumer Silverado Pickups Are Not Affected
The change should not affect standard Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra, however, there may be a separate issue developing for heavy-duty truck buyers. GM is reporting that the 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel engine could face availability issues later this year. The report says diesel-powered Silverado trucks currently make up more than half of available inventory, yet availability may tighten as the year goes on. But who knows, maybe this is a sign that thereโs an updated engine on the way? Time will tell.ย
