The Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of 37.8 million Kidde brand U.S.-sold fire extinguishers, manufactured as early as 1973. All fire extinguishers with plastic handles or push-button Pindicator fire extinguishers can fail to activate during an emergency due to clogging or detaching nozzles. 2.7 million units are also being recalled in Canada.

There have been approximately 391 reports of failed or limited activation or nozzle detachment, including the fatality, approximately 16 injuries, including smoke inhalation and minor burns, and approximately 91 reports of property damage. Many of the affected models came stock with recreational vehicles, so make sure to check the extinguisher in your motorhomes, travel trailers, and boats.

Consumers should immediately contact Kidde to see if their fire extinguisher is affected and to request a free replacement. Contact Kidde toll-free at 855-271-0773, or online at www.kidde.com and click on “Product Safety Recall” for more information.
